FUROSHIKI is a versatile wrapping cloth that serves so many different purposes in the culture of Japan.  Before suitcase was invented, large furoshiki cloths were used to wrap up personal belongings for traveling and moving.   Many still uses them to keep their storage tidy.  Gift wrapping, grocery bagging, neck scarf... you name it.  Most common use would be to wrap bento boxes.

 

When Japan is finally (aggressviely) looking into reducing the use of plastic bags, furoshiki is making a come back these days.
