The unique onigiri bento boxes had been sold-out for months, and ShibtaToku started making them again this month!!  A unique diamond-shape wooden bento box developed to hold 2 iconic Japanese triangle rice balls called Onigiri.  These rice balls are hearty lunch stable in Japan as they are easy to make and simple to eat (or devour when you are in a hurry).  Moms love to create cute faces on them with condiments and hide surprise ingredients inside the rice. Only when one bite into one will you find out the surprise flavor of sour plum, tuna, meat or veggies. Onigiri are molded by hands. Just wet both palms with water with a touch of salt (to flavor the rice and you mold the rice) and form steam rice into triangle shape. Together with the unique Japanese shokupan bread box, this is one of the ideas developed by a product design student from Kyushu Industrial University when they collaborate with ShibataToku in revitalizing traditional bentwood craft.
 
And who said bento box is only made for food?  Just be creative.  It can be used as storage containers for anything.  And we challenge your geometry knowledge turning your food into a tangram game!
 
Made with finely planed 4mm thick cedar wood with the iconic sakura bark stitching.   It has a very pleasant aroma of cedar wood.  Mr. Morita is a true master of bentwood craft, knowing precisely the number of grooves and the spacing in order to create all sorts of bent angles.  He aced Geometry class for sure!
 
Food portion is small in Japan as compare to Western culture.  So be sure to check the size before ordering.

We normally do not promote using plastic items.  But knowing many have not experienced making triangle rice-balls, we offer you a special molding tool to help you get the perfect shape and portion. Just put steamed rice into the mold and press down with the lid. The density of the rice ball depends on the amount of rice you put inside the mold. Since this is the last unit, we will throw in the triangle plastic mold for free!
