This matcha teabowl is the work of a local ceramist Hiroshi Yoshitake.  Yoshitake was exploring his own style influenced by "madara-karatsu" ware.  He mixed his own glaze using local straw ash.  The all-natural straw ash glaze with brown iron spots is the iconic effect of this series of work.

Yoshitake runs his own kiln in the mountain in Fukuoka and his specialty is anagama-yaki (wood-firing).  The labor-intensive firing process yields unpredictable effects and each one comes out of the kiln looking different.  True wabi-sabi style work.  Many times, 70-80% of work would be lost from the firing (collapsed shelves, melted pieces etc...).  Which makes pottery from this type of firing even more prescious.

Mr. Yoshitake collaborate with Komatsu as his work often has "imperfection" from firing.   Ms. Komatsu repaired a "natural" blemish on this chawan with kintsugi.

OUR COMMITMENT

To show our respect to this rare craft and wabisabi, we only showcase works repaired with authentic method done in Japan.

  • we do not break new pottery and repair it to create inventory.  Each piece comes with history and story.
  • we do not forge imperfection. All blemishes, imperfection you see is of the vessel's original state from the maker or from aging.

Peer through fancy packaging and romanticized philosophy about Kinstugi.  Be educated from the resource represented by Japan artisans to truly appreciate this craft.
