These Japanese paper are used to strain out debris/impurities from the urushi.   Pre-cut to 14cm squares so it is easy for you to use.     
 
At the refinery, after extensive processing and purifying, the last step before packaging is to filter the refined batch of urushi by straining it through cotton cloth, wringing at each end by 2 artisans.   When urushi artisans use the urushi, they will follow the same practice one last time, squeezing urushi through these fine Japanese paper before applying it to any surface.   Multi-filtering ensures the urushi lacque is completely smooth and free of debris. 
 
This is a quality-control to ensure there is no debris as the tiniest dust will show on the painted surface.
